Sponsor A Student In Nicaragua

James volunteers his time to help build / repair the school.

I’ve been helping an fellow I was friends with a LONG time ago — James Johnson — with a project he’s been supporting in Nicaragua.   It seems that a retiring schoolteacher from Connecticut, Louise Brunberg, was travelling in Nicaragua in the early 90’s, and she was appalled by the poverty and terrible educational conditions for some children in a town called Nagarote.  So, out of her own retirement income, Louise began building and funding a school and a hot lunch for some of the kids.

In the past 17 years, they have raised enough to attract and train Montessori-method teachers; get a rickety old school bus to pick up / drop off the kids; build a rudimentary building for 200 students, and create a 501(c)(3) organization to help defray the costs of the program.  Get more information from their website.

The entire operation can run on $50,000 per year, but it is still heavily reliant on Louise.  We have attracted many small donors since launching the tax-deductible contributions last year — but we need more people willing to “Sponsor” a student to the tune of $25/month (or more).   I have decided to do this — to help one kid in the third world have a small chance to escape the grim povery and limitations of his circumstances.  Regardless of your other commitments, please consider doing this, too.  Just click here to sponsor a student of your own or visit the school’s website to learn more.  You’ll get a letter like this one:

California recently passed the point where Caucasians were a majority.  We are now only a plurality.   On walks in the park, you are likely to hear people pass, chattering with each other in langauges other than English.  Spanish, of course.  But frequently Chinese, Russian, undetermined Slavic-sounding languages and, around our neighborhood, Japanese.   Further…

We just came to terms with the seller of a condo on the eastern coast of Kauai.   Closing in mid-June. It’s a wonderful location, right in the middle of a park.  This picture doesn’t show the new Kauai Path that runs along the shoreline.  The beaches are amazingly white and nearly deserted.  Just north…

  • Visit To The Babbage Engine

When I went to the Computer History Museum last month to see President Levin update the local Yale alumni on the “state of the university,” we got a quick tour of the Babbage Engine, which is reputed to be the first programmable calculator. Pretty impressive. A view of the Babbage Engine from…
