A Nice Friday

Up early, stalking the wild iPad 2 — which is in such short supply that you have to line up before the store opens to see if you can get one when the store opens at 9 AM. These folks were the first in line at the Palo Alto store, on University Avenue, and they had been in line since before 5:00 AM!

I got there at 7:40 and there were already 35 people in front of me.  Because the daily allotment is typically around 15 or 20, it didn’t look good.  But I stayed anyway.

At 8:20, a store employee came out to hand out little reservations cards showing what model you wanted (and that they had).  This is a good idea — so you don’t have to wait all the way to 9:00 just to learn they don’t have what you want.

By the time he got to to about the 20th person in line, all he had left was a model that virtually no one wanted, as it was small (16 gigabytes) and on Verizon’s CDMA network.  The other folks in line (who were mostly from Stanford) wanted the GSM network of AT&T, which works internationally, and they wanted larger storage capacity for video applications.   Debi didn’t really care about the size or which network she was on, so I was able to get the 16 gig Verizon model after about 20 people left.

While us lucky ones waited for the doors to open at 9:00, someone who had an AT&T 16 gig model decided they wanted a larger one and turned their 16-gig model back in … so I got that one instead of the Verizon one.

To celebrate, I got the car washed and these two kids were waiting for their mom’s car to finish being cleaned — how cute are they??!
