A Fall Friday In SF

I had to go into San Francisco for several meetings, so I took Caltrain’s “Baby Bullet” in, happily using the 58 minute ride to type up my notes from the previous evening’s SVASE meeting.  (I’ll post those notes onto Nodal Partners when they are ready.)

I walked over to South Park for coffee with David Hayden, learning about his new Cloudtalk.me company.  David is a mind-expanding thinker, often ahead of his time.   Cloudtalk is a big idea, requiring serious capital — not a Nodal Partners company.

But I digress.  In walking around SF, I was struck, again, with how pretty it is.  Turning one corner, I came across this little patio and greensward, serviced by an upscale restaurant and framed by a skyscraper in the back.  Pretty amazing.

Then, I had a short meeting with Tyler, who’s looking svelte these days.  He just got back from a 4 cities-in-5 days trip and was pretty tired-looking.  Involver just raised more capital and is now moving toward the Big Leagues.

Walking to another appointment at the Ferry Building I happened by this California store:

Sitting on the back patio of Farmers Market with Mari Tangredi, a friend from when Critical Path bought Faxnet, who should fly overhead, not high off the ground, but all five of the Navy’s Blue Angels, in perfect formation!! Warm sun, beautiful day, nice reunion with Mari … and the Blue Angels! … it doesn’t get much better than that. (Just another day in the big city, no?)

I’m a big fan of Nicky Case’s work.  She is a hard-to-describe creator, making online simulations, zines, tools (e.g., Nutshell – a tool to make expandable explanations), simulators, etc.) as well as giving talks, offering YouTubes, etc. She created a few things that addressed, in a brilliant synthesis of available cognitive science on the question,…

I looked thru the Super Bowl ads this year and have the following observations: * car companies simply MUST advertise, even at > $3m / :30 seconds.  I thought the car commercials were the best * e-trade didn’t disappoint; their latest baby advisor was precious * movie trailers are another high ROI category.  There were…
